Das ist ein Unikum, the Habsburg monarch Joseph II is reputed to have exclaimed to his Court Physician, Dr. Zwack, in 1790, when he first tasted this digestive liqueur. Today Unicum is the most popular drink amongst spirits in Hungary. We have good reason to be proud of the last 200 years during which Unicum has represented the best in quality and Hungarian tradition with its unique taste and packaging. Although the exact recipe is a carefully guarded family secret, it can be divulged that Unicum is made of over 40 different herbs and spices, blended and distilled before being aged in oak casks for six months to create its inimitable flavour and harmony. Unicum has a beneficial effect on the digestion, and it can be savoured either as an apéritif or as a digestif. You can drink it chilled, yet its rich taste can be appreciated the best at room temperature. Hungarians like to steep prunes in Unicum and serve them together with the drink, straight or in a long drink – the ultimate digestive miracle, and delicious.
